Vole Prevention: A Recent Job & Some Homeowner Tips

What I Walked Into

A homeowner in Idaho Falls reached out after noticing strange trails across parts of the lawn.

At first, they thought the grass was just thinning in certain spots. But after a closer look, they noticed narrow surface paths running through the yard and some damage near landscaped areas.

That is usually when voles become a concern.

When I arrived, the homeowner showed me the areas where the lawn looked worn down. There were small surface runways, clipped grass and activity near ground cover and garden edges.

The damage was not everywhere, but it was enough to show that something was moving through the yard regularly.

The Problem

The main issue was vole activity around the lawn and landscaping.

Voles are different from gophers. Gophers usually push up soil mounds from underground tunnels, while voles are more known for surface runways, clipped grass and plant damage.

At this property, the signs were pointing toward vole activity:

Narrow paths through the grass.

Clipped grass along surface runways.

Damage near garden beds.

Activity around ground cover.

Possible root and plant damage near landscaped areas.

That kind of activity can spread if the conditions stay right.

For homeowners in Idaho Falls & South Eastern Idaho, voles can be frustrating because they affect areas people care about most: lawns, gardens, shrubs and landscaped spaces.

The Process

I started by walking the yard slowly and checking the damage pattern.

With voles, the surface trails matter.

I looked closely at the lawn edges, garden beds, ground cover, plant bases and any areas where the grass looked pressed down or clipped.

I also asked the homeowner when they first noticed the trails and whether the damage had started spreading.

That helped us understand where the activity was strongest.

After the inspection, I explained why the signs looked like vole activity and showed the homeowner the difference between surface runways and other types of lawn damage.

The goal was to help them understand what was happening before the damage became more widespread.

The Outcome

The homeowner felt relieved to finally understand what they were seeing.

Before the inspection, they were not sure if the problem was from watering, lawn wear, pets or a pest issue.

After walking the yard together, the surface runways and plant damage made the situation clearer.

We talked through the service plan and which areas needed attention first. We also discussed ways to monitor for new activity, especially around ground cover, lawn edges and garden beds.

That gave the homeowner a simple plan instead of guessing.

DIY Advice I Shared

Here are a few things I recommend homeowners check for:

Look for narrow surface runways through the lawn.

Check for clipped grass along trails or edges.

Inspect garden beds and plant bases for damage.

Watch areas with thick ground cover or heavy vegetation.

Keep landscaping trimmed and reduce protected hiding areas.

Take photos of new damage so you can compare changes.

Schedule service if the trails or plant damage keep spreading.

Vole activity can be easier to manage when it is noticed early.

Professional Insight

One thing I always tell homeowners is that vole damage can be easy to miss at first.

It often starts as a few small trails or worn spots in the grass. Then, over time, the damage becomes more noticeable around plants, garden beds and lawn edges.

The key is to look for the pattern.

If you are seeing surface runways, clipped grass and damage around vegetation, there may be active vole pressure around the property.

Around Idaho Falls & South Eastern Idaho, keeping an eye on lawn edges, ground cover and landscaped areas can help catch activity early.

Closing Thoughts

If your lawn has narrow trails, clipped grass, damaged plants or activity near ground cover, it is worth checking for voles.

Small signs can turn into larger lawn and landscape problems if the activity continues.

Moxie Pest Control helps homeowners across Idaho Falls & South Eastern Idaho inspect vole activity, explain what is happening and recommend the right next step for protecting the yard.
